The consultancy program includes construction of new hatchery with bio-security measures, remodeling and management of old hatchery under complete pathogen free system. Hatchery consultancy program includes:
Site Selection
The site selection and design of a hatchery intake system needs to be site specific. Factors to be taken in account are ocean currents, wave action, stability of coast line, soil type; and costs and ease of maintenance.
- Water quality: "Oceanic" water quality is required.
- Brood stock Supply: After water quality, the second most important limiting factor is access to brood stock.
- Distance from the ocean.
- Distance from grow out ponds.
- Elevation and topography.
- Freshwater supply.
- Electrical supply .
Design and Construction
Development of new facilities in an existing Hatchery
Sea Water intake, Storage and Filtration, Pipe lining, Aeration, Maturation, Spawning, Hatching, Larval rearing, Live Food Culture and Nursery facilities
Management and Operation
Feed and feeding management of shrimp larvae, Maintaining water quality, Monitoring Shrimp larval health and disease control, Harvesting, Packing and Transportation etc.
A shrimp hatchery requires the coordination among the individual production units e.g. maturation, spawning, larval rearing, algal sections and artemia hatching unit; and quarantine staffs and equipments of individual section.
Sanitation of the supportive systems such as on site PCR laboratory, toilet area, cleaning space, work shop, store and generator room plays vital role in maintaining cleanliness of the hatchery. Also, management systems e.g. feeding application, good management practices (GMP), standard procedures, record keeping and checklists; and infrastructural systems such as regular supply of electricity and backup generator system, quality water intake, filtration system, effluent treatment and discharge canals set up have significant contributions to the productivity and quality of shrimp larvae.

| SETTING PCR LABORATORY AND TRAINING |
|
EBPL provide guidelines towards setting up of PCR in the individual hatchery level, educational institutions and other analytical laboratories interested in diagnosis of shrimp and fish viruses. Also, helps in setting up laboratory in seafood processing plants towards detection of pathogenic bacteria vital in food safety.
Simultaneously provides training on the very practical skills involved in the PCR diagnostic to the technical personnel of the consulting laboratories and other interested individuals along with it's global partners in Indian and overseas.
PCR diagnostic includes a wide range of viruses commonly found in black tiger shrimp ( Penaeus monodon ) ,White shrimp ( Penaeus indicus ),American white shrimp ( Penaeus Vanamai ) and fresh water prawn ( Machrobrachium rosenbergi )
The viruses seen in these species are namely WSSV, HPV, IHHNV, YHV/GAV, TSV, MBV, MoV. The tests are conducted on the samples collected from the brood stock (mother prawn),Nauplii, post larvae, and other larval and adult life cycle of shrimp life cycle..
The consultants have hands on experience in the laboratory of Farming IntelliGene Corporation, Taiwan ; Centre for Shrimp Biotechnology, Enbiosys , India ; and are trained in Mahidol University , Thailand . They have set up many PCR laboratories and involved in SPF projects in Asia and Latin American countries. So, are well equipped with recent advances in shrimp biotechnology and practical aspects requires in shrimp culture. That enables them to provide correct feed back to the farmers about the sample and help in taking correct measures in the farming operation.
